The 2011 Stephenville Kiwanis Club Pancake Supper was held at Gilbert Intermediate School on Thursday, March 3rd.  Although at press time, dollar totals were not yet in.  Going by the number of attendees alone, the event was a huge success

Both Andy and Mike have been Kiwanis members for numerous years.

The Stephenville Kiwanis Club members kept pouring the batter and flipping the pancakes for the large, hungry crowd.

The Pancake Supper crowd was treated to some fine jazz music by the SHS Jazz Band.  The SHS Jazz Band is directed by Mr. Mike Childs

Mr. Morris Gifford enjoys a plate of pancakes, bacon and sausage.  Mr. Gifford has been a member of the Stephenville Kiwanis Club for over 50 years.

David Swearingen of the Kiwanis Club of Stephenville, Texas visits the Kiwanis Club of Sapulpa, Oklahoma on the National Day of Prayer (May 6, 2010).  David was up visiting his brother, Weldon Swearingen, in nearby Kiefer, Oklahoma and decided to drop in and visit with the Sapulpa Club during their weekly meeting.  It just so happened that they were holding a special meeting since it was the National Day of Prayer.  Because it was a special occasion, several of the area clubs members were present including several members from Tulsa, OK.  The current Division 25 Lt. Governor and the incoming Division 25 Lt. Governor were both present at the meeting and David was lucky enough to sit at the same table with these gentleman.  Photo shows, L to R: David Gonzales (incoming Lt. Thursday, April 8th

Project Smile is a fundraising cause to raise money to purchase playground equipment for two local Stephenville elementary schools.  The playground equipment is designed to be handicapped accesible so that the handicapped children can enjoy playing right along side the non-handicapped children.  Several Stephenville service clubs worked together at this fundraiser which included: horse rides, 3 different live band performances, bounce houses, bounce slide, carnival-type games and plenty of good food.  The following Stephenville clubs worked together on this evening fundraiser which was held an area rodeo arena: Kiwanis, Lions, Optimist and Rotary. 


April 9 , 2010

Stephenville Kiwanis member, David Swearingen, spent a little time in this mock jail to raise money for the American Cancer Society.  David was arrested at his work on Friday, April 9th, and placed into custody until he could make arrangements to get a minimum of $25 in donations (to the American Cancer Society).  Luckily, David was able to raise $36 bail and he was back at work about an hour later.  Please consider donating to the American Cancer Society. David is located in the back row, in the center, in the photo.

"Stephenville Kiwanis Club welcomes the Key Club Lt. Governor Elect for Division 35 & 36 which covers parts of Texas and Oklahoma"

 

On Tuesday, March 23, 2010, the Stephenville Kiwanis Club had a special visitor and guest speaker from Mineral Wells at their meeting.  His name is Abel Betancourt and he is a high school junior at Mineral Wells High School.  Abel is currently the Key Club Lt. Governor for Division 35/36 which covers parts of Texas and parts of Oklahoma.  On April 11th, he officially takes over in his position of Lt. Governor.  Abel came and spoke with the Stephenville Club because he is very interested in getting a Key Club started at the Stephenville High School campus.  The SHS Vice-Principal, Rob Dean, was also at the meeting so that he could learn from what Abel had to say as well.  Key Club is basically a service organization such as the Kiwanis but at the high school level.  The Key Club receives assistance and guidance from the Kiwanis Club in organizing their club, holding their meetings and with the various projects which they themselves choose to take on.  Key Club members will also work with the Kiwanis Club on some of their events or projects as well.  Photo shows, L to R:  Kiwanis President Cristie Campbell, Abel Betancourt, Rob Dean, and Kiwanis member, Mike Masuda.

The Stephenville Kiwanis Club continues to help support the Child Protective Services and the Rainbow Room with the purchase of gift cards from Payless Shoe Source.  And Payless Shoe Source is doing their part by applying a discount to purchases made by Child Protective Services on behalf of the children.  These gift cards were purchased by the Stephenville Kiwanis Club and then donated to the Child Protective Services offices here in Stephenville.  Photo shows, L to R: Kerith Jones of Payless, Mike Masuda of the Kiwanis Club, and Emily White of Payless.

TSU Athletic Director and Head Coach of the TSU Men's Basketball Team, Lonn Reisman, visited the Stephenville Kiwanis Club on Tuesday, Oct. 27th.  Coach Reisman shared information about TSU Athletics including all of the various TSU sports teams.  Coach Reisman also shared some interesting stories on his coaching style and experiences.  This coming basketball season will be the 22nd consecutive year that Lonn Reisman has coached the TSU Men's Basketball Team.  He has brought great success to the program.  Photo shows Kiwanis member Dwain Bruner (left) standing with Coach Lonn Reisman.

Today, Donna and Dennis "officially" became members of the Stephenville Kiwanis Club after being "pinned" by Kiwanis President, Cristie Campbell.  Photo shows, L to R: Dennis Han,  President Cristie Campbell and Donna Kirklen.  The Stephenville Kiwanis Club is proud to welcome these two new members.  The Stephenville Kiwanis Club has also achieved a "first" this Kiwanis year.  President Cristie Campbell is the first lady President that the Stephenville club has ever had.  Congratulations, Cristie, we are very proud of you.

The Stephenville Kiwanis Club was recently made aware of the need for batting helmets for three T-ball teams in Dublin, Texas.  After being notified of the need, the club purchased the helmets and presented them to the teams on game night.  Each of the three teams received four new helmets.  The teams were very excited and proud of their new batting helmets.  Play Ball!

Aron Hutchins (Stephenville FFA Chapter President & Area 4 FFA President) spoke to the Stephenville Kiwanis Club today.  Aron shared some of his numerous FFA experiences with the club and also told them how FFA has helped to make him a better person.  Aron is a SHS senior and he was accompanied by his Agricultural Science Teacher, Laurah Williams.  Photo shows, L to R: Kiwanis Lt. The Stephenville Kiwanis Club awarded numerous children for being Terrific Kids and this one child is especially special to our club.  He is Derek Gifford and he is the great-grandson of Kiwanis members, Morris and Beverly Gifford.  Standing on the left in the photo is Kiwanis Member and Chamberlin Elementary School Principal, Barry Cavitt. 


December 9,2008

The Stephenville Kiwanis Club held their 2008 Christmas Party at the United Cooperative Services on December 9th.  A good time was had by all.  There were plenty of good things to eat, a guest performance by several of the SHS trumpet players and a visit from Santa Claus for the foster children that were our special guests.

The Stephenville Kiwanis Club donated gift cards from Payless Shoe Source to the Child Protective Services so that they can be used to purchase shoes for the children in need.  Photo shows Kiwanis Member, Mike Masuda (center) donating the cards to Tonya (left) and Desa (right) of Child Protective Services. Tonya and Desa deserve a pat on the back for doing a job that can often be difficult.  Great job, girls!

Past Stephenville Kiwanis member, Ethan Love, comes back to Stephenville to ride in the Firecracker 100 every year.  Ethan now lives in Austin, Texas.

Cary Fowler, TSU Football Defensive Coordinator, speaks to the Stephenville Kiwanis Club about his Kiwanis background, TSU football and the importance of positive adult role models.  Coach Fowler explained the importance of being supportive to youth during their teenage years and into early adulthood.  He explained that just because a person fails that does not make that person a failure.  "Failure is an event, not a person" said Coach Fowler.  He explained to the club how he was in Key Club (Kiwanis Club at the high school level) and also in CKI (Kiwanis Club at the college level).  All the club members left the Tuesday lunch meeting feeling like they had been to a Pep Rally.  Great job, Coach Fowler.

Special guest of the Kiwanis was Dr. Jim Kirby of TSU. Jim teaches mathematics at Tarleton but today he showed us some of his other talents. He juggled for the group and performed several really cool magic tricks.

The certificate honors the Stephenville Kiwanis Club for over 20 years of continued sponsorship. The Stephenville Kiwanis Club is the charter organization for Troop 18 and Pack 18 Scouts of Stephenville.

Kiwanis member, Karen Lindner (right) helps to prepare Faith Field for the first game of the season. The field will be used by children with "special needs" to play their t-ball games on. The Faith Field is located next to the Faith Lutheran Church. The Stephenville Kiwanis Club donated $4000 to be used to help construct the field.

Kiwanis member, Gene Morrison, works for the Sheriff's Department. Gene helped to raise money for the Relay for Life (American Cancer Society) by making mock arrest and putting people in a mock jail until they were able to raise $30 for the Relay for Life. Not sure about Justin, he might still be in there.

Pancake Supper Co-Chair, Suzanne Porter, presented two of her fellow Kiwanis members with award gift baskets for the excellent jobs that they did selling Pancake Supper tickets and placemat sponsorships. The Stephenville Kiwanis Club held another successful Pancake Supper. Over $4000 was raised at the supper. Thanks to all of the members for their hard work. Thanks also to the pancake eaters, the sponsors, the auction item donators, the Boy Scouts, and the entertainers (the SHS Jazz Combo Band and also Mr. Wayne Cooper).

Blanket Drive is a huge success as Kiwanis members collect and receive nearly 80 blankets for the Stephenville Kiwanis Linus Project. Blankets will be given to area Fire Departments, Police Departments, Erath County Sheriff's Department as well as Child Protective Services. The blankets will eventually be given to children during times of trauma as a comforting item.

Upcoming events are the Kiwanis Blanket Drive/Live KSTV Radio Broadcast on February 23rd and the Kiwanis Pancake Supper on March 13th. Blankets received in the blanket drive will be donated to area Fire Departments, area Police Departments, Erath County Sheriff's Department and Child Protective Services. Blankets are given to children that are removed from their homes because of fire, child abuse, parental drug usage and other traumatic situations. Blankets can be used for warmth as well as for just a comforting item for a young child.

This year's Pancake Supper will be held on Thursday, March 13th at the Gilbert Intermediate School from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. Angelia Joiner speaks to the club about the recent UFO sighting reports that she reported on as an Empire-Tribune newspaper reporter. These sightings have been drawing attention from all over the state and world. (photo on right)
